Meet Gemma Whitelock, inaugural TASC Changemaker in Residence:
Gemma has been a prominent figure in Lincoln's plant-based food sector for the past five years, dedicated to promoting a vegetable-forward approach to eating for improved physical and mental well-being.
She has spearheaded various impactful community initiatives, including the highly successful store cupboard recipe box scheme launched during the pandemic. This innovative hybrid service, blending elements of a recipe box and food bank package, provided access to nutritious meals by combining store cupboard staples with fresh, locally sourced vegetables. By guiding recipients through practical recipes, the initiative fostered kitchen confidence, nourishment, and dignity during a challenging time.
In addition to her work in the food sector, Gemma has a strong background in further and higher education in design. She has worked extensively to guide students in developing sustainable business projects, combining creativity with ethical principles. Her mentorship has been instrumental in equipping the next generation of changemakers with the skills and confidence needed to create impactful, purpose-driven enterprises.
In recent years, Gemma has demonstrated her commitment to sustainable food practices by establishing 'The Allotment,' a plant-based café rooted in B Corp principles. Within just six months of opening, the café achieved B Corp pending status, exemplifying her dedication to ethical and sustainable business operations.
Gemma's work continues to evolve with a strong focus on community support, empowering women, championing vegetable-centric cuisine, and advancing sustainability in every aspect of her endeavours.
About TASC's Changemaker in Residence programme:
The Changemaker in Residence programme invites a local or international social impact leader to collaborate with learners and Team Academy, bridging theory and real-world action. This residency inspires students through workshops, mentorship, and collaborative projects, offering them the chance to engage directly with impactful initiatives while supporting the changemaker’s ongoing work.
Selected changemakers, including social entrepreneurs and community leaders, participate in a 6–12-month residency, balancing their fieldwork with mentorship roles. They guide students on leadership, innovation, and social strategies while co-developing projects like community outreach, social enterprises, or advocacy campaigns. These efforts are enriched through storytelling, think tanks, and measurable impact assessments.
Changemaker-led initiatives align with TASC’s curriculum, providing hands-on learning opportunities for students while advancing the changemaker's goals with access to resources, funding, and student support.
